Purpose of the Role:

The selected candidate will work on projects related to ecotoxicology and petroleum substance (PS) databases and modelling. He/she will be involved in a project to develop a thorough database to allow Concawe to track ecotoxicological research outcomes and, consequently, estimate ecotoxicological parameters used into relevant environmental models. The objective is to provide the Concawe Ecology Group with a tool that correlates ecotoxicological research data to PS, and facilitate dossier updates of Concawe membership.

The internship would also include involvement in other projects such as PS identity profiles, environmental emission predictions for PS, toxicity of heterocycles, polyaromatic hydrocarbons effects and evaluation of the impacts of REACH regulation for the refining industry.

Background Information

Concawe represents the interests of 40 Companies operating petroleum refineries in the EU. Members account for almost 100% of EU petroleum refining capacity and more than 75% of EU motor fuel retail.

The association aims to promote economically and environmentally sustainable refining, supply and use of petroleum products in the EU, by providing input and expert scientific advice to the EU Institutions, Member State Governments, member companies, and the wider community, thus contributing in a constructive and proactive way to the development and implementation of EU policies and regulations.

General responsibilities:

  • Support the REACH Executive Team in their daily tasks and projects
  • Organise Working Group meetings
  • Work closely with other members of the support staff to meet team goals efficiently

Specific responsibilities:

  • Gather technical information, technical scientific reports, scientific publications
  • Set up a functional database
  • Analyse results and apply statistical methods, if requested
  • Record information in a clear and traceable manner, using different media
  • Run environmental prediction models (training will be provided)

Professional Profile:

Skills & Competences

  • Excellent Word & Excel skills and familiarity with MS-Access
  • Excellent organisation skills
  • Excellent transcription skills
  • Self-starter and autonomous in his/her work
  • Ability to ask for help when needed

Education & Experience 

  • A bachelor’s degree in biological sciences, ecotoxicology, (bio)chemistry, environmental science/engineering.
  • Additional knowledge on petroleum substances, polyaromatic hydrocarbons, environmental fate, environmental hazard and risk assessment and REACH regulation will be an asset
  • Excellent spoken and written English is a prerequisite.
  • EU citizenship or permit to work in EU is required.

The traineeship is remunerated.
